Blunt Beats Radio presents - “A Night Of Noodling”

grin4.jpg
That’s right…it’s nearly that time of the week again. However, this weeks live show has got a bit of a twist. We’re going down a bit of an ambient/electronic/experimental route on this weeks radio session.

We’ve been speaking to some of you good people in webland, who have been telling us how much you like this kind of musical excursion. Well, that’s fine with us, because it means we can get indulgent, and play stuff we love, for what it is. Quality music from right around the world, but it’s more likely to make your brain ooze than your booty jiggle (though you never know!)

Expect bits of electronica, amibent, and experimental avant-garde noodlings. A right eclectic but vitamin-rich mix. Sets this week will be from Blunt Beats residents Agent M and the Erbalist, with long-time Blunt Beats cohort J passing through Blunt HQ, steppin’ up to drop an exclusive set for Blunt Beats Radio, containing some hand-picked, stir-fried oddments, as our welcome guest. Live, just like every week, from 8pm UK time. Wednesday. Nice.

You know this is gonna be a quality selection….

If you can’t catch the show, don’t forget it’ll be available for download via our radio page at for 7 days after the show…so no excuses!

We’ll catch you Wedneday. 8pm. For a succulent course of electronic noodles of the highest standard….

Flip flop ya don’t stop

Flip flops on the grass. That's what it's all about, baby. Oh yes.Well it’s been a sweltering day today and summer has definitely arrived on the scene - some would say it’s too early, but hey. Weather like this is made for getting outdoors, finding a big patch of grass and kickin’ back in some flip flops.

I’m originally from the East coast of Scotland and now live in Newcastle, so sunshine is still a wee bit of a novelty. All that extra vitamin D has dispelled the seasonally affected disorder and inspired me to buy a pair of aforementioned flip-flops and throw this solarflarin’ 55min. mix together. It’s a bit of a sampler of things to come this summer from Blunt Beats, in the build up to Urban Picnic Sounds 2007 in July (Keep your eyes peeled for updates on here soon).

So, my recommendation is - jam this into the nearest iPod or boombox, go find as much open space as possible and soak up some rays. Tracklisting is below. Enjoy… Continue reading…

Blunt Beats Radio 25th April

grin3.jpgHere we go again. The Blunt Beats resident DJ’s will be doing their thing, live from 8pm tonight, UK time. It’s gonna be a bit of a mixed bag o’ tricks this week, with a selection of funk, soul, hip hop, and drum and bass. The running order for this weeks session like like this:

8.00-9.20 - The Erbalist, fresh back from Paris, will be kicking things off with some funk and hip hop cuts from his ever growing collection of gems.

9.20-10.40 - Agent M returns with more hip hop beats. He’s been on a bit of a reggae, and a soul tip of late (the sun has been out!), and his music selection has been chilled out to the point of horizontal, so he’s well up for playing something a little more rugged tonight. (saying that, the sun is still out, so expect the odd soul or funk tune to sneak it’s way in!)

10.40-12.00 - Marcus G Hurley takes us up to midnight, with the second part of a 2 part drum and bass history lesson. This session will follow on from last weeks show, which we know from the feedback that you guys in webland enjoyed! - Expect more of the same tonight. Old skool drum and bass from 94-97 courtesy of Mr. Hurley.

Don’t forget, if you aren’t able to listen to the show live tonight, you can download the whole shebang for the next 7 days, via our radio page. No excuses! :)

Chicken Skin and Stash Tins

soulfood.jpgAgent M has been at it again. He’s recorded a tasty, organic, full-fat mix of quality music for you lucky people, entitled “Chicken Skin and Stash Tins”. The man himself goes on to explain…

“I got the notion to record this mix whilst taking a sunny drive through the wooded Bedfordshire countryside with the Erbalist and Ras Garvey in the speedy red bluntmobile, on our way to a shiny studio at a secret rural location.”

“We were on our way to see the notorious Northern Monkey, Ummbop, and all the crew at Carousel Sound Lab, for some early afternoon recording studio shenanigans, a bit of shop-talking, and general lounging business.”

“At the time I was busy munching on the colonel’s bucket, so to speak (I was enjoying a KFC), and had a Pete Rock beat called “Midnight and You” running around my brain. It was a pretty cool combination! Simple minds, simple pleasures and all that, I guess!”

“Anyway, I decided I needed to mix up some indulgent, mellow, and contented beats.”

With time and hangovers permitting we hope to make these a weekly series starting very soon. But for now Part 3 is here and is put together by myself and Agent M.

It’s a bit of a hip-hop & funk affair with ten of the best cuts making up this 40min. minimix that chugs from Jurassic5 to the O’Jays.

For all the trainspotters the tracklisting is below. Enjoy… Continue reading…

Exclusive RiotControl NYC interview with Burt Fox

riot.jpg

Right then…You may have noticed us here at HQ making a fuss of late over the musical output of the RiotControl crew, out of Brooklyn, New York. Put quite simply, these guys are on-point. RiotContol is Burt Fox and Sonny Noir, who produce quality mixes/podcasts, across a variety of genres. The shit is as it should be done, and was in fact the soundtrack to the first barbecue of the year at Blunt HQ (believe me, that is an accolade in itself)

Each episode is created in a mixtape style, and covers a lot of ground, across all kinds of genres. What makes it special is the selection, order and blending of some great tracks, with Burt on the decks, and Sonny with the mic, heading up proceedings.

We got in touch with the guys, both to let ‘em know we love what they do, and to tell ‘em that it’s good to link up with people who view music in a similar way to ourselves. Call it a meeting of like-minded soundbwoys! After chatting to Sonny, Agent M tapped the RiotControl crew up for an exclusive interview. It’s M on the questions, and Burt on the replies across the pond. Continue reading…

Blunt Beats Radio 18th April

grin.jpgMidweek comes round at a hell of a pace these days. The weekend finishes, there’s a bit in the middle, then it starts again. Must be the good weather. We’re not complaining…Anyway, I’m rambling. The point of this post is to remind you all in webland that we’re live on air tonight from 20:00BST (which is GMT+1 for you international lot), like we are each and every Wednesday.
Sets tonight look like this:

8.00-9.20 - DJ Hughes on the Dub tip….just what you need for the sunshine.

9.20-10.40 - Old Skool hardcore from Marcus Hurley. This is the first of a 2 part show from Mr Hurley (the second part will be on next weeks show) - This weeks show concentrates on vintage hardcore and drum and bass from 92-94. Nice

10.40-00.00 - Agent M steps up, and sets you up for the late night chill with some downtempo, left-field beats.

Right then….We’ll catch you 8.

Trojan Dubs Mixtape

Trojan RecordsIt’s Friday the 13th. I’ve not been too well…I needed something to take my mind off both these facts. The solution came to me in as far as I decided I need to record some dub. It’s been a while, and a few people have been hassling me to play some dub, roots and stuff – so I thought I’d better pull my finger out…

I started digging through the boxes here at HQ, and pulled out a load of dub recordings on the mighty Trojan record label. As I did so, the sun came back out, I kid you not. Just what the doctor ordered!

There are tracks in this mix from artists such as King Tubby, Tommy McCook, and Sly Dunbar. Excuse the distortion on “A Loving Melody” - it’s a fantastic little tune, but this isn’t the best quality of pressings. Your amp isn’t clipping, it sounded like that here when I recorded it!. Anyway, a tracklisting for this mix is below, and you can listen here. Continue reading…
