"Classic and unique beats, down and dirty round the edges, for people who should know better."

Groundbeat October tracklisting

As predicted, last night’s Groundbeat radio show was top quality. Loads of classic and contemporary tunes with a jazz feel, all thrown in the mix for one big 4-hour session, and covering a wide spectrum of sounds.

A full tracklisting is below, and don’t forget you can download the whole show via our radio page for the next 7 days. Continue reading…

A minute With Illmind

A quick eye-candy post today. I received a YouTube subscription update from our good buddy ab0181 (who loyal readers will know as DJ Prolifik) and peeped this stop-motion clip as the latest vid to hit his channel.

There will be more to come from ab0181 in the near future, as we intend to pin him down for an interview about his filmmaking hijinks, but until then check out more from his YouTube channel.

It’s A Jazz Thing

oldskate1.JPG That’s right. It certainly is. This weeks live radio broadcast sees the latest episode of our “Groundbeat” series. Basically, it’s a night of jazz-influenced music, with a bit of the traditional stuff thrown in for good measure..

That’s my kind of way of describing it. You’ll have to decide for yourself. Saying that, we always get good feedback on this popular show, so we must be doing something right.

Expect lots of downtempo hip hop, latin beats, film scores, and maybe a touch of funk to be all thrown in the mix with some big brass sections and crashing drums. DJs on the night will be Blunt Residents Doug, Agent M, and Marcus Hurley.

Blunt Beats Radio presents Groundbeat. Live from 8pm UK time, Wed 29th October. www.bluntbeats.com/radio

Narukami Records digital releases

Those of you into the harder-edge of the drum&bass spectrum will be interested in this. Our good buddies at the brand new label Narukami Records have burst onto the scene with a brace of new digital releases.

TrackItDown had the following opinion on Seizmic’s debut ‘Rejuventation‘:

Always ace to see brand new labels kicking off as they mean to go on! UK based Narukami drop their first smash by label manager Seizmic and boy what a stormer. Pumping jump up drum and bass that bobs and weaves like a champ with some live sounding percussion and great vocals. Kinda like Technique meets Viper. Styling.

And they had this to say about the follow-up release ‘Transistor Hustler‘: Continue reading…

King Of The Road (Ramp/Swimming Pool/Sidewalk)

oldskate1.JPG (Before any of you make any smart-arsed comments, that picture isn’t of me!)

I came across a copy of this film ages ago, but didn’t put a link up here for the simple reason I’m slack. (Problem??)

Anyway, this is a documentary shot by a British TV crew in 1978 (when I was just a toddler…that wasn’t yesterday!), and it’s entitled Skateboard Kings.

Filmed in Southern California, this has some great footage of some of the best riders of the time (arguably, of any time) doing what they are best at. Continue reading…

Moonstompin’ Tribute to the late, great Alton Ellis

Last nights Moonstompin’ radio show certainly live up to its name, with plenty of skankin’ sounds from our own Agent M, and guest DJ Matty J, who took you on a top quality ska and rocksteady journey.

Our special thanks go out once again to guest Matty J, who, aside from airing some top-notch original recordings, and playing a blinding set, he also took time out to pay a musical tribute to the “Godfather Of Rocksteady“, the late, great, Alton Ellis, who died recently. R.I.P Alton, and well done Matty, for a fitting tribute. (you can read a copy of Alton’s obituary from The Times here)

You can download the whole 4 hour show via our radio page for the next 7 days, and a full tracklisting is below.

Getting In Early

Now, we’re sometimes known as having something of a laid-back approach to things here at HQ. Some might say too laid back. (they can piss off) But, this doesnt apply to everyone we know. Oh no. With a risk of sounding like a grumpy old man (Though I’m not, but it’s open to debate), I got a bit of a shock when I opened my post today. It wasn’t a credit card bill. It wasn’t a ransom note. Today, I got my first Christmas card.. Continue reading…

Calcium Crackerz

broken.jpg Those of you who follow the blurb that we write (when we can be bothered) on this site will be aware of the fact that I’ve been involved in a few hospital-residing episodes over the past few months, with broken bones, cracked ribs, and heavy medication being the order of the day.

Saying that, I’ve still found time to do the odd radio show, mix (and festival) here and there. (Don’t tell the doctor!) This mix here that I’ve hilariously entitled “Calcium Crackerz” is taken from one of our recent Soul Food radio shows. Its just a mix of straight up hip hop classics really. Don’t be expecting any amazing mixing, as I do have an arm thats still broken in 3 places. (Many people will say I sound just the bloody same when I’m not smashed up. Philistines…)

Saying that, the tunes are good, and it’s been a while since I’ve put anything out for download, due to both lazy and medical reasons. You can download the mix and listen to it at your leisure here, and a full tracklisting is below.

A Little Extra Moonstomp

As you’ll have noticed from my previous post, this weeks radio show sees the return of our ska and rocksteady night, Moonstompin‘. It also sees the retutn of our good friend and spot-on DJ, Matty J.

Just to get you in the mood, I thought I’d post a link to one of Matty’s previous Moonstompin sets, for you to download and listen to, here. This was recorded live on the night of transmission.

This set is in our 24/7 mix loop. For those of you that are unaware, we have a loop of mixes from ourselves, guests, and good friends that runs when our radio shows are off-air. You can access this at any time via our radio page.

Time To Moonstomp

Right then. You’d better get the braces out of the drawer, run an iron over that Ben Sherman, and lace up your cherry reds.

Expect lots of rarities, classics, and scratchy wax, in a reggae style!
