A Question Of Taste

nazi.JPGUnlike the 3rd in line to the British throne (left), we here at Blunt Beats pride ourselves on our good taste. Especially in our music. Before we even get to our radio shows, or gigs, or whatever, we’re always on the lookout for artists, labels, and radio shows that give us quality output.

So, we thought it’d be a good idea to give you an insight into what we’re listening to, and to show some appreciation to the crews that we’re liking, and give them a bit of support. Spread the love, so to speak. (Unlike Mr Harry Windsor)

In order to do this, we’re launching a new themed radio show entitled “Taste“, whereby we’ll introduce you to some on-point podcasts, radio shows, and DJ mixes. Essentailly, stuff that we’re liking, and is shaking the floorboards at Blunt HQ. The first episode will be introduced by our own Agent M, and will include music from Focuz, Baron Sound, Bastard Jazz Radio, Riot Control, and Mixtapeshow.net. Expect to be introduced to some fresh styles, in this case encompassing hip hop, funk, soul and reggae, from US and European providers.

Different Noodles

Due to back pain (he’s pregnant), Marcus Hurley will not be joining us on our live raido show this evening. However, all is not lost. You’ll be in capable hands, being treated to 2 hour sets from the respective Resident Blunt Noodlers, Agent M and Doug. This show will include a 2 hour mix from Agent M, concentrating on releases from minimal Argentinian techno record label Miniatura Records. Doug will be providing some downbeat yin to equate the harder Argentinain yang, with a selection of ambient beats and downtempo electro hip hop.

Hope you enjoy…

Win Free Tickets To Matter This Weekend

matter.JPGWe are a nice lot. An so are our friends. Our “man on the inside” at Fabric, Oli, has kindly given us 4 pairs of tickets to give away free for this Saturday at Matter. The night in question is the Zombies Sound System event, running until 7am. Underground techno and house beats are the order of the day, with DJs including Dan Ghenacia, Tim Sheridan, and Jo Mills.

We’ll give 4 lucky people a pair of tickets to the event. To win, just answer this simple question:

If you were a Zombie, and had a soundsystem, what would you call it?

Send your answers to radio[at]bluntbeats.com

All answers that we like will be put into one of Agent M’s baseball caps, and 4 lucky winners will be drawn at random. Deadline for entries is mid-day Friday. Good luck!

Noodles With An Argentinian Flavour

Electric Noodles

This Wednesday’s live radio show sees the return once more of Electric Noodles. Downtempo and electronica is the order of the day in this case, with a dash of acid and electro thrown in for good measure.

Your noodles will be served this week by Blunt Residents Doug, Agent M, and Marcus Hurley. Talking of which, expect to hear an exclusive set in a minimal style by Agent M, focusing on the output of Argentinian-based record label Miniatura Records. Sure to be good. There will be more coming from Miniatura here on bluntbeats in the future, so use session as an introduction to their (quality) work.

Soulfood ready for consumption

Another year, another Soulfood session served-up. The show has been baked into a light, 128-calories-per-second mp3 and is sitting on the window sill of our radio page to cool down. It only remains for me to remind you of the ingredients (OK, enough of the food/cooking metaphors).

Agent M kicked things off with a hip hop session assembled from the depths of the netlabel scene (with a few well-known faces thrown in). Next up was a mix from Swank ‘n’ Jams of Planet Terror fame. Many thanks to them for supplying the bouncy hip hop/funk/ska affair that was their Gathering Pace mix.

Our resident CD-deck-o-phile, Marcus, stepped-up next to continue the hip hop theme with a fine selection. I was on call to finish off with a few soulful sounds to wind things up for another week. As ever, a full tracklisting is below for the trainspotters.

Planet Terror Records: The Interview

terror.JPG You may well have read my post about that fact that we’ve got an exclusive set from Swank n Jams from Sheffield-based Planet Terror Records on this weeks Soul Food radio show.

Now, I’ve been in contact with label co-founder Fred for a little while now, and I’m liking what they’re doing. All being well, we should be doing quite a bit with them in the future.

So, I thought it was about time I got round to asking a few questions to Head Terrors Sam and Fred, to find out a bit more about what they’re up to, and what makes them tick, in an exclusive interview stylee.

So, let’s do that, shall we…?

New Video From Tommy Sparks

I got this sent through to me yesterday. It’s the new video from Swedish electro-pop meister Tommy Sparks. Word has it that it’ the first music promo to use hypnotism. I think I’d disagree. If it was the first music promo to use hypnotism, it’d make explaining the success and following of Basshunter a lot more tricky!

Anyway, it’s a cool video. Take a look. If you like his stuff ,you can catch him live at Kill ‘Em All at Fabric on Friday 23rd January, alongside premier French electro beatmaker Yuksek, and many others. A full line up for the event can be found here. Continue reading…
