(Before any of you make any smart-arsed comments, that picture isn’t of me!)
I came across a copy of this film ages ago, but didn’t put a link up here for the simple reason I’m slack. (Problem??)
Anyway, this is a documentary shot by a British TV crew in 1978 (when I was just a toddler…that wasn’t yesterday!), and it’s entitled Skateboard Kings.
Filmed in Southern California, this has some great footage of some of the best riders of the time (arguably, of any time) doing what they are best at.
For an old-timer like me, it’s great to see some footage of the early days of the sport, as at the time, the UK was just getting it’s head round this dangerous, childish, new-fangled, and downright fun activity. And look at it now. Bloody billion-pound industry. It wasn’t like that in my day (grumbles loudly). Oh no. people with long hair didnt even have jobs, let alone make money out of skating around on a bit of wood. (Im 31 going on 71, in case you hadn’t noticed)
Now, there’s no skating for me at the moment as I’m still nursing a broken leg, and I was no bloody good anyway. But dont let that put you off. Settle down and enjoy this cult film, and daydream about selling the semi, ditching the missus, putting the kids in a sweat shop, and moving to California. (unless you already live there….erm…I’ll shut up)
Enough from me. Watch the film here.
